Dissertation Journal

Experimental publication

Brief

Design a journal to showcase a collection of 11 dissertations from the graduating cohort of BA(Hons) Graphic Design.

The publication should be sympathetic in concept, design to

a student audience and *promote critical writing practice as an integral aspect of undergraduate study.

Solution

We both write and draw with Ink.

INK is a typographic publication which emphasises the relationship between critical writing and pictorial / graphical representations. It demonstrates that these two ways we humans drum up representations are equally valid and each share in the same whole. I have achieved this through focusing on the structural relationship and interplay of the paragraphs and images. Each image casting a shadow in written text, or having its weight and position counterbalanced. Focusing on typographic hierarchy and creating symmetry and harmony in the design of each spread has resulted in a publication which not only aids perception of the subject matter, but has aesthetic quality which keeps readers engaged.

'Graphic designers are responsible for the communication of ideas through words, signs and pictures. Yet experimentation and new aesthetics cannot emerge without a thorough understanding of reading and writing; if we accept that language is important, we must be prepared to protect it.'
